About Norfolk

NORFOLK cOWS ROAM FREE.

One of the biggest surprises for visitors to Norfolk Island is driving and spotting a herd of cattle wandering our roads, with no farmer to be found. No, your eyes aren't playing tricks on you. Unlike most parts of the world, Norfolk Island cows are free to roam our roads at their leisure, sharing the space with cars and pedestrians alike.

To keep all our curious cows safe, it is the law on the Island that cows have priority right of way in traffic. You will also notice reduced speed zones of 30-40km/h scattered across Norfolk. While cattle may have full access to roam, some strategically placed cattle stops are located around the main areas of town. Making sure these beauties don't find themselves strolling down the main street
(or through our local shopping centre)!

It's common knowledge on Norfolk that you only build fences around your property if you want to keep the cows out of your gardens. Our bovine companions are great lawn mowers for our local nature strips. This also means they're rather cheeky and might be quick to munch up your newly planted flowerbeds if they get through a gate!

“People don’t fence cattle in, they fence them out.so they can roam free.”

Slick & Sons

Locals can register up to 10 cows under their name (with a small registration fee). They are given a coloured registration tag to attach to their ear and then set free to roam the Island to their heart's content. Of course, you can also keep them located on your property if you would rather they don't go exploring.

To maximise the flavour and do honour to the cattle, we have a custom dry aging cooler that allows us to rest the Norfolk Island beef for a further two weeks. Once the Norfolk Island beef is aged, our butchering team breaks down the individual components and creates cuts of beef for your enjoyment.

Tips for visitors

Watch where you drive. Cows have the right of way on our roads. Keep both eyes open and always follow the speed limits. Slow down or stop for as long as is needed for the cows to move on their way. High beams at night are a must.

Watch where you walk. There are many beautiful sights on Norfolk Island. However, keep one eye on the ground at all times. Otherwise, you may end up standing in a gift from the locals. 💩

Go snorkelling in the beautifully quiet and calm Emily Bay, if you're feeling energetic swim out to the pontoon and practise your best jumps off the pontoon! Or take a peaceful stroll up to the top of Mt. Bates, the highest point on Norfolk Island.
